Plot of land for biochar plant

SCS GmbH rents in Stuttgart-Obertürkheim

Start-up plans to produce sustainable biochar

A young company is settling on the Aurelis Real Estate site at Stuttgart-Obertürkheim station: SCS GmbH has been renting a 900 square meter open space in Augsburger Straße since 1 November 2022. The start-up plans to produce sustainable biochar there from December 2022. This is a temporary use until the construction of the quarter development begins.

The biochar is used, for example, to improve the storage capacity of rainwater in the soil, to make urban trees more resistant to climatic events, but also to create additional retention areas during heavy rainfall. Retention areas provide additional space for regulated flooding and therefore better flood control.

In addition, the product makes a significant contribution to CO2 reduction, as a high proportion of the bound carbon remains stored for several hundred years: "Our biochar, which can be used in Stuttgart, has the potential to store approximately 5,000 tons of CO2 per year," explains Dr Thorsten Alxneit, founder of SCS GmbH.

The raw material for biochar is biomass from prunings, green waste and sawmill residues. The aim of SCS GmbH is to use regional biomass and spread the biochar in Stuttgart and the surrounding area in order to establish a sustainable circular economy.

"We are delighted that we were able to lease the open space to SCS GmbH for interim use and thus to a start-up with a sustainable business model," explains Birgit Schweiger-Pfannemüller, Head of Asset & Property Management in the Aurelis Central Region.
