Why substrates need to do more today

Whether in urban green spaces, agriculture or horticulture: substrates are the basis for healthy plants and stable vegetation systems. However, many conventional substrates are based on peat, are low in nutrients or quickly become structurally unstable - with consequences for plant growth, irrigation requirements and the carbon footprint.

Biochar offers real added value here: it makes substrates more durable, stores water and nutrients, promotes soil life and significantly reduces the carbon footprint.

In combination with compost, sand, wood fibers or other additives, high-quality substrates are created - individually tailored to the intended use and site conditions.

How we develop and use our substrates

Our substrates are developed in close cooperation with users from local authorities, horticulture, agriculture and research. We pay attention to regionality, functionality and environmental impact.

Biochar as a substrate component: Depending on the application, our substrates contain 5-25% activated biochar - to improve the structure, nutrient retention capacity and habitat function. Nutrient activation: The biochar is pre-loaded - e.g. with compost extracts, fermentation liquid, liquid fertilizers or microbiology - for a quick effect in the soil. Structural stability & water retention: Our substrates are dimensionally stable, free-flowing and water-retaining - ideal for planting pits, planters or tree grates. Peat-free & regional: We deliberately avoid using peat and instead rely on compost, wood fiber or sand - depending on the desired function and availability.

What we specifically offer

Soil activator: Our classic product for vitalizing urban trees, beds and green spaces - with biochar, compost, mycorrhiza and structural carriers. Black soil: Inspired by Terra Preta - a high-performance substrate with high nutrient retention, ideal for permanent crops and raised beds. VfBErde: A special highlight: our peat-free substrate mix with turf leftovers from VfB Stuttgart - regional, recyclable and CO₂-storing. Substrate consulting: We develop customized substrate mixtures for your application - including analysis, mixing formulation and delivery logistics. Delivery loose or in BigBags: Our substrates are available as loose goods, in BigBags or as bagged goods - depending on requirements and volume. Recommendations for use: We provide practical advice on application, storage and effect - for maximum results.
